Glossary

Perched: to land and stand in one spot.

Aerial: something happening in the air.

Ledge: a flat surface that sticks out from a wall.

Gravel: a cluster of small stones.

Hatch: a bird coming out of an egg.

Banded: the process of placing a band on a bird’s leg.

Extinction: when a species is gone forever.

DDT (short form): a banned pesticide.

Banned: when the government passes a law making something illegal.

Species of Concern: a species at risk of becoming threatened or endangered. Endangered means an animal or species is at risk of extinction.

Stooping: a Peregrine Falcon’s hunting dive.

Talons: a bird of prey’s claws.

Rehabilitator: someone who helps an animal with an illness or injury feel and get better.

Flame Retardants: chemicals that helps to prevent a fire from starting or spreading. Some electronics (eg. computer), textiles (eg. clothing), polyurethane foam (eg. stuffed toys), and plastics are coated with this substance.
